BUNYAN, John
(1628-88)
Elstow, near Bedford
Colourful writer and local preacher, much imprisoned for uncompromising expression of his distinctive Puritan views. His Pilgrim's Progress presents the individual's movement through life allegorically as a journey. It was widely read and influential in subsequent centuries, renowned for its evocative characters and experiences like Mr Worldly Wiseman, Vanity Fair and the Valley of the Shadow of Death.
