North American Christian Ethicist, identifying with the Methodist evangelical tradition and open to wider aspects of Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant, as well as to the thinking of a full range of twentieth century moral philosophers and theologians. Particularly known for his interest in the shaping of character by reference to Christian resources and vision, and for his representation of a Christian challenge to violence and the status quo.
