LOYOLA, Ignatius
(1491 - 1556)

Founder of the Jesuits. During recovery from wounds received as a soldier on campaign in the Spanish army, his reading of Jesus and the saints led him instead to take on a life of Christian pilgrimage to Jerusalem and back – and in turn to the founding of the Society of Jesus. Their order was one of mission to whichever country and people the Pope might command, and their means was one of service that sought to understand the context and the people whom they wished to bring to faith in Christ.
