Renowned as a controversial Jesuit philosopher and theologian and as a geologist and palaeontologist. He brought together confidence in the purposeful thrust of the evolutionary process and unrelenting faith in God's future for humanity. His cosmic perspective on space and time highlight the importance of a global perspective in Chrstian ethics. In the decades immediately following his death, his work became a bridge for Christian-Marxist dialogue.
