KOLBE, Maximilien
(1894 - 1941)

Franciscan priest, active in Italy, Poland, India and Japan in establishing devotional centres for the Virgin Mary. He was arrested in 1939 and again in 1941 for anti-Nazism and underground assistance to Jews. In Auschwitz, he changed places with a condemned Jew and was eventually killed. He was recognised as a saint by the Pope in 1971.
