Roman Catholic theologian, with prodigious expository skills, reflected in an enormous number of books. Although his recognition as an orthodox theologian was withdrawn by the Church in 1979, he has continued to expound his understanding of the Christian faith to a wide international audience. Latterly, he has come to be identified with the movement to promote a Global Ethic as necessary for the peace, justice and even survival of humanity.
