...A discussion of Murdoch’s philosophy and her views of religion and especially of her notion of morality. Murdoch sought the Idea or Form of the Good: "All else," says Alan Jacobs, "including God, is an image or substitute for this utter good…" Furthermore, our propensity for substituting the image for the reality may render even God an obstacle. Thus, in Murdoch’s view, not only can we lose God, but if we are to retain Good, we must eventually lose God. Whilst Murdoch insists that the good life is possible, she avoids raising questions concerning those who are evidently uninterested in it. Her moral philosophy, believes Jacobs, lacks an adequate concept of the will.
