Key figure in the 'social gospel' movement in N America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A Baptist minister who from working in the 'hell's kitchen' of New York saw that the gospel requires radical social and political transformation. The kingdom of God is a model for a society based on the Christian principles of equal rights and democratic distribution of economic power.
