Focus for bringing more order and consistency to the monastic forms of Christianity which had developed in the course of the previous two centuries. His Rule had immediate and lasting influence, especially in the west-european sections of the church. It brings together a Roman imperial sense of social order and a spirit of ascetic enthusiasm, all worked out in terms of a routine of manual work, of study and of worship. In 1964 Pope Paul VI made him Patron Saint of Europe.
