vocation
sense of purpose and meaning in life derived, at least in part, from convictions which go beyond immediate reasoning. In biblical tradition, prophets were called, so were the People of Israel and the individuals who responded to the opportunities for a new way of life presented by Jesus. In church tradition, it came to be especially associated with monastic and priestly callings. Its wider connotation as applying to the responsive lives of all Christians links it with the personal challenge to every person, by virtue of being human, to achieve particular meaning and purpose for themselves and others.
